Why You Should Give up Smoking

Smoking used to be cool in the 1950’s before people realised that it killed you. You can be forgiven if you are a time traveller from this decade and are only just reading this. If not, then there is no excuse really.

I’m sure everyone has seen the statistics before but just in case you haven’t:

  • Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day.1
  • On average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers.

41,000 deaths from secondhand smoke exposure? It’s not bad you’re killing yourself but you have to go and be responsible for killing other people too.

Dying 10 years earlier than nonsmokers? Do you want to  be alive to see your son/daughter grow up? Or how about being able to be apart of their childhood and actually play with them? I see those parents who always sit on the sidelines while their child is off adventuring, don’t be that parent.

By quitting smoking it will help you to be actually involved with your child and not just present.

I see so many people my age still smoking, taking no regard to the constant bombardment of anti smoking education. It’s as if they consider their lives so worthless that they are willing to do untold damage to themselves .

It is not the image of a great man to be throwing away their cash on cigarettes and to inflict self harm for a cheap, short nicotine hit. An addiction to nicotine is a bad and destructive one.

You ever heard of the “runners high”? Get addicted to that instead. Honestly i’m not much of a runner but give it a try and see if you like it. There’s no better feeling than hitting a PR on a big lift like a bench or deadlift in the gym, maybe try that instead.

If we do some quick math: The average cost of a 20 cigarette pack in the UK cost around £8.74. If you’re foolish enough to smoke 20 a day for a year that’s 3,181.36. Think of all you could do with that money like save, invest or pay off loans.

Smoking also makes you look disgusting inside and out, I don’t need to show you photos of it. Don’t pretend like it won’t happen to you if you’ve fooled yourself into thinking that you’re a special snowflake. You need to face your challenges and issues head on.

Quit smoking, take control of your life, improve yourself and never look back.
